Over here at ponytails & productivity we are 100% committed to getting big stuff done, and the first step to getting any stuff done is starting your day off with a solid foundation – breakfast. The right breakfast made with real food is the single most important step to keeping you focused and running smoothly through an entire day. And overnight oats are my favorite way to do that.
Oatmeal is having a moment, and I’ve got to say I’m thrilled about it. Whole oats are filling, highly nutritious, and have amazing effects on your health – they lower your cholesterol, help balance your blood sugar (important if you’re hypoglycemic like me!), and regulate digestion… and they’re amazingly easy to pair with other foods for some pretty mind-blowing flavor combinations.
The best part is, they can take 30 seconds to prepare the night before and throw in the fridge. Overnight oats are the easiest healthy breakfast I can think of, and take less time to grab in the morning than pouring a bowl of cereal. You can’t beat that!
So I’ve compiled a list of my # favorite overnight oats recipes down below. Let me know which ones you’ve tried in the comments!
1. Peanut Butter and Banana overnight oats
Via Delicious Little Bites
This is a classic flavor combination and one of my all-time favorites for its simplicity and quick prep time – plus, the peanut butter adds a super punch of protein to your breakfast!
2. Maple, Brown Sugar and Cinnamon oats
Via Evolving Table
Hands down, you will not believe this recipe only has a few ingredients. It’s perfectly warm and has just enough spice so that you’re not overloaded by the sweetness of the maple syrup or brown sugar. I like this one best warmed up, and it’s ideal for cozy fall mornings with a cup of coffee.
3. Caramel Apple Pie overnight oats
Via Tornadough Alli
Oh. My. God. These ones might be best for dessert rather than breakfast, but I am not about to judge what time of day you eat these at. They’re to die for. Personally I like having a rich and sweet breakfast once in a while – having these waiting for you in the fridge practically guarantees you won’t be skipping breakfast that day.
4. Blueberry Muffin Overnight Oats
Via Fit Foodie Finds
The secret in this one is the subtle zing from the lemon zest which makes this recipe truly over the top delicious. Anyone who says oatmeal is boring has not tried these oats, I guarantee you that. And this might actually be one of the few oatmeal recipes that I personally prefer cold over warmed up!
5. Chocolate Chip Zucchini Overnight Oats
Did the title of this one surprise you? I promise this isn’t like hiding cauliflower in your mashed potatoes to trick your kid into eating vegetables – the zucchini in this recipe fully holds its own paired with a vegan protein powder and flax seeds. This blogger gives a lot of nutritional background information with the recipe as well, which I personally really like – it makes you feel great about what you’re eating.
6. Pumpkin Chia Overnight Oats
When I was growing up, I didn’t realize people actually ate pumpkin beyond pumpkin pie and roasting the seeds. It’s only in the last couple of years that I really started seeing pumpkins as food instead of just jack o lanterns, and I’ve got to be honest, I’m gutted when I think about all those years I missed that I could have been putting pumpkin in things. It’s one of my favourite foods now, and this pumpkin chia oatmeal does not disappoint.
7. Spiced Gingerbread Oatmeal
Via She Well
Okay, technically this isn’t an overnight oats recipe. But if you’ve got a few minutes to spare and want to whip up something truly amazing, definitely look into this incredible recipe. My only regret is that I didn’t find this link until after Christmas had passed… I’ll be making this next year for sure.
8. Peach Cobbler overnight oats
I’ll be honest with you, I’ve never made this one. My family loves peaches so much that as soon as we bring them in the house, they’re gone. I’ve never gotten a chance to put them in anything! But I’m bookmarking this recipe to use over the summer, even if I have to hide the peaches to do it… it looks SO good.
9. Almond Strawberry Overnight Oats
I love the slivered almonds in this recipe. When you include nuts in overnight oats, they tend to soften and become just a little bit chewy… it’s amazing. And fresh strawberries are always an amazing breakfast addition!
10. Ginger Snap Superfood Overnight Oats
Via lemons + zest
I love this nutrient-dense and spicy oatmeal recipe, and while it tastes somewhat similar to the spiced gingerbread recipe up above, this one packs a nutritional punch with maca powder, chia seeds, and pecans to round it out. If you’re looking for a hearty spicy kick in the pants to supercharge your mornings and nail your goals, this one is it!
This is just ten recipes, but if you like these, the internet is full of them – or you can make your own. Oatmeal is an amazing base food because you can add just about anything to it for flavor and feel great about what you’re eating!
